Bloodroot, Canadian, Sanguinaria canadensis L. cut
Canadian Bloodroot belongs to the poppy family and grows in the eastern half of North America and Canada. The perennial prefers moist forest soil, reaching up to 10 cm height with a bluish-green long stem and white bloom with yellow stamens, which occurs between March and June. The plant contains an orange-red milk juice.
The Canadian bloodroot was formerly used as a valued medicinal plant. Today it is used as a bactericidal additive in the dental and oral care.
Attention when dosing! Danger of Poisoning!
In the subterranean parts of the Canadian bloodroot the akaloid content is up to 8% of the dry matter. Sanguinarine is dominant with about half of the total alkaloid content, followed by chelerythrine, which is also found in celandine (Chelidonium majus) and accounts for about one quarter of the total. So only use Sanguinaria canadensis in a Homoeopathic dose!
